Join Guest Bloggers Hayley and Nate @travellingsalzmans as they lead you through their exploration of Puglia’s hidden gem: Otranto.

At the Southern end of Italy’s heel, where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet, you’ll find the often-overlooked seaside town of Otranto. This town, with its white-washed walls, quaint streets, exceptional restaurants, and towering Aragonese castle, is the perfect base to discover everything that makes Puglia great!

The coast is dotted with spectacular grottos and beaches, each more beautiful than the last. A cliffside walking trail that draws hikers from near and far. The drive was incredibly scenic, almost worth the trip alone!

Just 40 minutes from Brindisi Airport, it’s the perfect weekend or week-long escape. Otranto captures the hearts of each and every visitor to this enchanting town!

One. Explore Heavenly Grottos by Sea

Otranto’s coastline is best explored by boat. One fabulous way to do so is with Hydra Excursion, a local boat tour operator who will show you the very best of Otranto’s coastline. Your skipper may not speak English, but he will give you an exceptional experience – it’s all a part of the charm of this town!

There are plenty of tour options to choose, from a romantic private tour for two (with an apertivo and bottle of prosecco post-swim) to a seat on their larger vessels!

Two. A Fabulous Seafood Dinner at ArborVitae

Set amongst the flowers and trees, ArborVitae’s garden terrace is fit for any lover of fine seafood. A lovely gentleman who we christened a ‘fish sommelier’ makes your acquaintance and walks you through the day’s options. All are superb, it’s some of the best fish you can find in Puglia. A reservation is a must for this special place!

Three. Roam the streets of Otranto and Visit the Aragonese Castle

Lovers of architecture, history, and shopping will rejoice, this town has something for everyone. And if you happen to love all three, you may never leave!

From local pottery and artisan shops to fashion boutiques, there’s nothing quite like shopping in Otranto. It’s the perfect spot to pick out your Italian souvenir. While you’re shopping, stop in for lunch at Postofisso pucceria agricola for a mouthwatering sandwich. While the capocollo di martina franca is exceptional everywhere, it isn’t to be missed on their classic sandwich!

Whether you walk the Aragonese castle grounds on your own or tour the inside for a fee, the castle is a stunning piece of architecture to admire. Take in the views of the city at night for a special treat.

Roam this quaint seaside town, through its narrow pedestrian streets to its beautiful port-side promenade. And when you’re ready to take in the evening air, grab a seat on one of Otranto’s endless patios for an apertivo while watching the locals and travelers amble along beside the sea.

Four. Relax on the Beach: Baia dei Turchi and More

The sandy, sheltered coves of the Salento region offer the perfect location to take a dip. Just North of Otranto, about 10 minutes by car, you’ll find the Baia dei Turchi, one of the nicest beaches in Otranto and Puglia alike.
For those looking for a bit of privacy and a bit of an adventure, head to Spaggia dei Porticeddhri. It’s a bit of a walk but so worth it! Wade in from its tiny stretch of sand and float alone in the crystal clear Adriatic.

Five. Visit the nearby town of Castro

A trip to Salento isn’t complete without a visit to Castro. Split into the old hilltop town and the newer Castro Marina, there is so much to discover! On a warm day, locals and vacationers alike will take a dip in the Castro port.

For history lovers, the area in and around Castro is still an active archeological site. Many of these findings are housed in the museum within Castro’s Aragonese castle in Castro’s old town.

For one of the most picturesque and Instagrammable swim spots in Puglia, drive 6 minutes South of Castro and lounge in the cool clear sea at Cala dell’Acquaviva. Or jump off the cliffs if you’re on the more adventurous side! When you’re ready for some shade and a glass of wine (or a refreshing basil-infused cocktail), Anam Terrace at Cala dell’Acquaviva has the same epic views with some delicious drinks!

Otranto is the perfect base to explore the untouched coastline of Puglia. A favourite of Italian vacationers, Puglia has emerged as a favorite among international travelers too. Puglia, and it’s picture-perfect town of Otranto, should be on everyone’s travel bucketlist.
